A pilot scheme to transform health and care services has been so successful, it's being rolled out across Sandwell. Targeting the over 65s, the Sandwell Community Offer has helped more than 1,400 people  in their home or local community since it launched in October last year. The project - which aims to reduce demand on formal heath and care services - brings together voluntary and community organisations to offer a wide range of support.

Initially introduced in six areas of the borough, it is now being extended. It has also recruited 300 volunteers and good neighbours to help deliver the scheme. Types of support that people are typically helped to take up includes: healthy lifestyle advice, exercise groups and vaccination services as well as transport, cleaning and furniture moving/removal services.

Councillor Yvonne Davies, cabinet member for adult social care and health, said:"The Community Offer provides befrienders to tell people about all the help that is available to them in their community, and to help them take up the support that they want.

"The befrienders can also help the person attend social events and get more actively involved in the community if they wish." The Community Offer is open to any Sandwell resident aged 65 or over. The scheme is also looking to recruit more volunteers to become befrienders.
