Have you ever craved a curry or pined for a pizza, but worried that eating takeaway foods wasn’t really good for you? Well there’s now an opportunity to learn how to make ‘fakeaways’ – healthier versions of your favourite ‘takeways’.
As part of the Healthy Haringey campaign, in which the council and its partners are working with communities to make Haringey a healthier place, a number of free cookery classes are taking place at Tottenham University Technical College this month.
Two free classes will be held at Tottenham UTC on Tottenham High Road, on Wednesday 27 May between 10am-12noon and 1pm-3pm.
The classes will be lead by UTC chef Barry Stowell and take place in the college’s state-of-the-art classrooms. Participants will learn new ‘fakeaway’ recipes, watch live cooking demonstrations and get chance to put their cookery skills to the test.
Cllr Peter Morton, Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said:
“Everyone wants to eat healthily, but not all of us know how to cook tasty, nutritional meals that won't break the bank. These classes will give people the practical skills and knowledge to make healthier food at home, helping them to save money and stay healthy.
"Through initiatives such as this – not to mention our investment in leisure centres and promotion of the Healthy Schools London programme - we’re working hard to create an environment in Haringey where the healthiest choice, is also the easiest choice.”
‘Fakeaway’ cookery classes are just one a number of examples where the council working is working with the local community to help tackle obesity in Haringey and the serious health problems it causes.
