Novelist and television presenter, Fern Britton, celebrated completing a 21-day cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End, where she was joined by 80 cyclists all working together to raise funds for vital medical research into miscarriage.
Fern, who is Patron of Professor Robert Winston’s charity, Genesis Research Trust cycled over 1,100 miles passing through some of the UK’s most spectacular scenery: via lochs and the Highlands including the Rest and Be Thankful road which passes along the shores of Loch Fine; skirting the Lake District encountering 48 mph gusts of winds on the notorious Shap Summit; the dramatic landscape of Dartmoor. Despite often difficult terrain and challenging weather conditions including headwinds of around 48mph, Fern and the team of dedicated supporters managed to brave the elements and exceeded their target of raising £57,000.
The money raised is estimated at £150,000 and will be spent on the recruitment of scientists at Imperial College London working on research to predict who will miscarry and put in measures to prevent tragic outcomes.
“I am proud to have been part of this epic adventure and thank the cyclists who joined me, sponsors and everyone who supported us along the way. Together we can make a difference and help discover why women miscarry so we can end the heartbreak and tragedy that so many families endure,” she said.
