Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett has expressed optimism in the growth prospects for the sector stressing that “this is the biggest and best winter season Jamaica has ever had in the history of tourism” adding that the tourism industry was set on a path to continue the boom now being experienced.

He said: “For the January to March 2023 period, it is estimated that Jamaica welcomed 1.18 million visitors, which represents growth of 94.4% when compared to the same period in 2022.

Two thought-provoking panel discussions on the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) recently held by WTM Africa have brought to light the substantial roadblocks hindering the realization of open skies in African continent.

These obstacles include visa restrictions, exorbitant costs, and protectionism. Until these issues are effectively addressed, airlines will not be able to achieve the required load factors to make their routes financially viable, rendering the benefits of open skies irrelevant.

The Hon. Derek Hanekom is known as an outspoken and hardworking South African Minister of Tourism from May 25, 2014, to March 30, 2017. He was re-appointed to serve as the Minister of Tourism from February 27, 2018 to May 29, 2019.

Hanekom also served as the Minister of Science and Technology from October 4, 2012, to May 25, 2014, and as the Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs from 1996 to 1999.

A judge ruled Wednesday that the Dutch government cannot order Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs, to reduce the number of flights from 500,000 per year to 460,000, dealing a blow to efforts to cut emissions and noise pollution. The ruling came in a summary case brought by airlines and civil aviation organizations led by Dutch carrier KLM that sought to halt the planned cuts unveiled last year.
