Birmingham celebrated Commonwealth Day with a number of events, backed by the Birmingham Commonwealth Association, including a British Citizenship Ceremony attended by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Birmingham.

 

The Lord Mayor was on hand to give the Commonwealth Citizens, and new British Citizens their certificates on Commonwealth Day.

"I am proud to be British, and I'm proud to be a Brummie" said Cllr Shafique Shah as he opened proceedings at the Birmingham Registry Office. "This is a special day, and a special occasion for all of you"

A total of 27 new Citizens were sworn in at the ceremony, which followed a Commonwealth Flag raising outside the Council House.

Keith Stokes-Smith, Chair of the Birmingham Commonwealth Association was also on hand to present a certificate from the BCA to the new British Citizens.On it, the certificate stated "Be proud to be British; be part of its community and if you can, play an active role in it and contribute to it with a sense of belonging. We wish you well."
